4 Building Workspaces The Composite and Edit operators are different from Paint, Text, and Particles because you define the properties of the composite, or Edit operator, and not the properties of a piece of solid footage. In the following example, a 3D Composite is created. The new composite appears in a Composite branch, and is initially empty (no layers, but it has a light and the camera). 2. Select the footage you want to open. CTRL-click to import multiple files. Note: If you open multiple clips, a composite layer is created for each selected piece of footage. For more information on the file browser, see "Using the File Browser" in Chapter 2, "Welcome to Combustion''. 3. Click OK. The Open Footage dialog appears. The Footage Library is empty (there is no triangle next to it) because no footage is in the workspace yet. Creating Composites There are several ways to create a composite: • Open footage and place it in a new composite. The composite settings are based on the size and duration of the first file you select in the Open file browser. • Create a composite, and then import footage into it. You define the composite settings such as frame size and duration. • Open footage into the Footage Library, then add a Composite operator to it. This operator can be added to footage like all other operators. See Opening Footage and Creating Solid Footage. To open footage into a new composite: 1. Choose File | Open (CTRL+O). The Open dialog appears. 4. Click either 2D Composite or 3D Composite and then click OK (ENTER). The footage is imported into a new composite. The composite uses the format settings (for example, the size and duration) of the first file selected. To create a composite: 1. Choose File | New (CTRL+N). The New dialog appears. 88
