About Transitions ❚❘❘ there is adjacent empty space in the Edit timeline; other segments do not change their positions. To slide a segment: 1. Set Ripple or Overwrite mode. See Setting Ripple and Overwrite Modes. 2. Position the cursor over the segment you want to slide. The slide cursor appears. 3. Click and drag the segment in the direction in which you want to slide. Note: To snap the segment, press Shift while sliding. Segments snap to the nearest marker, the current time indicator, and frame 0. 4. Move the segment to the required position in the Edit timeline and then release the mouse button. About Transitions When you perform an edit that involves blending two segments, such as a dissolve, the result is composed of two clips, the original source footage before the edit, and a junction between the two clips, called the transition. The clip before the transition is the outgoing clip, and the clip after the transition is the incoming clip. The outgoing clip, incoming clip, and transition are all parts of the edit sequence. Before inserting a transition, you must make sure to have enough head and tail frames on the outgoing and incoming clips to accommodate both the transition length and position. For example, to insert a ten-frame center dissolve between two segments, the outgoing segment must have at least five tail frames, and the incoming segment must have at least five head frames. You can create three types of transitions: cuts, dissolves, and wipes. These are described in the following sections. Creating Transitions Add cut, dissolve, or wipe transitions to segue between two clips. Cuts are straight transitions from one segment to another. Dissolves are blending transitions between clips. Wipes are non-blending transitions that hide or reveal the outgoing and incoming clips. You can create transitions and customize their duration and anchor position. Cuts are indicated by a black dividing line between two segments. Dissolves and wipes are indicated by an icon in the Edit timeline, which indicates the transition type, duration, and alignment. To create a dissolve or wipe transition, you must have enough head and tail frames in the outgoing and incoming segments to accommodate the transition duration. If you do not, the transition duration is automatically shortened to reflect the available frames. If no frames are available, the transition is not created. The following figure illustrates an Edit timeline with two five-frame centered transitions. 397

To slide a segment:

About Transitions

When you perform an edit that involves blending
