21 Using Filters Select To Duplicate Repeat the fields to fill in the scanlines that separate the fields in each frame. For example, if Upper First is selected, the first frame of the result clip consists of the upper field, and each scanline of the upper field is duplicated to fill the lower field. The second frame of the result clip consists of the lower field, and each scanline of the lower field is duplicated to fill the upper field. Interpolate Fill the scanlines that separate the fields in each frame with an average of the scanline above and below the line that separates the fields. Merge Create frames consisting of an average of the upper and lower fields. The average of the two scanlines fill both fields. Because both fields are used in the same frame, two identical frames are created for each deinterlaced frame. Note: For every Method option, the first frame of each result clip is dependent upon the field order setting. If Upper Field is the selected field order, the first frame will consist of the upper field. If Lower Field is the selected field order, the first frame will consist of the lower field. 5. In general, leave Retain Frame Rate enabled (default). If the frame rate is not retained, problems may result since the result clip is twice as long as the source clip, and the frame rate adjusts accordingly. To use the Remove Fields convert option: 1. In the Workspace panel (F3), right-click the layer you want to deinterlace and choose Operators | Video | Deinterlace. The Deinterlace Controls panel appears. Note: Ensure No Fields is selected in the Field Separation settings in the Footage Controls panel. 2. From the Field Order list, select Upper First or Lower First. 3. From the Convert list, select Remove Fields. The field specified in the Field Order list is retained, and the other field is discarded. For example, if Remove Fields is selected from the Convert list and Lower Field is the selected field order, the upper field is discarded. Since one field is discarded, the result clip is the same length as the original clip. 4. Select a method from the Method list. The methods for the Remove Fields convert option are the same as the methods for the Fields to Frames option. Select To Fill with Black Fill the missing scanlines that separate the fields in each frame with black. Duplicate Repeat the fields to fill in the missing scanlines Fill with Black Fill the missing scanlines that separate the fields in each frame with black Interpolate Fill the missing scanlines that separate the fields in each frame with an average of the scanline above and below the line that separates the fields Merge Merge the upper and lower fields into a single frame. When Merge is selected, no fields are discarded. Remember that, unlike the other three options for Remove Fields, this one does not throw out the other field. Note: If Remove Fields is selected, the Retain Frame Rate option is unavailable. Using the Interlace Operator Once you are done working on the field-separated frames of a clip, and your final output is intended for interlaced display, use the Interlace operator to recombine the fields of a deinterlaced clip. When fields are recombined, the result clip is half as long as the field-separated clip (if you used the Fields to Frames deinterlace option). 582
