Feathering Masks To feather the edges of a mask, select the mask, and then adjust the Feather slider in the Modes controls. object. A (+) indicates a combined mask, a (-) indicates a subtracted mask, a (=) indicates a replaced mask, and an (x) indicates an intersected mask. To combine mask objects: 1. Draw a mask object. 2. Under Global Apply Mode in the Modes controls, select Intersect and enable Invert. Feather slider Feather is essentially a blur over the entire mask shape, which effectively softens the edges-but with no control over how far in or out the softness goes. Edge gradients offer more control over how the softness cuts into or grows out of the mask. You can also use feathering with an edge gradient. For example, you can use a spline edge gradient for variable softness along the edge, and still use a small Feather value for the overall softness of the shape. Combining Masks Once you create a mask using any of the mask tools, you can add to the mask, subtract from the mask, or obtain a mask from the intersecting portion of any new mask that overlaps existing ones. Note that if the layer contains transparency already defined on the alpha channel, you need to use the Global Apply Mode settings to determine how the alpha channel and mask(s) are combined. Note: In the Timeline, combined, subtracted, or intersected masks are differentiated from regular masks by a symbol after the name of the mask 3. From the Combine Mode list, select Add (+).
