5 Compositing 5. To constrain the movement to one or more axes, select the X, Y, and Z options in the Toolbar. Note: Depending on the view, you can constrain movement when you left-click and drag or rightclick and drag in the viewport. See Tool Constraint Shortcuts. When you rotate, scale, or shear the layer, the layer now rotates, scales, or shears around the new pivot point. The child can move anywhere in the scene independently of the parent, but any transformations to the parent (moving or rotating, for example) affect the child. You can also create a null object that you can use as the parent, or parent layers to lights and the camera (and vice versa). To parent a layer: 1. Select a layer in the Workspace panel, or in the Composite Controls panel from the Current list. 2. In the Composite Controls panel, do one of the following: • Select the layer you want to set as the parent from the Parent list. Controlling the Behavior of Layers You can create relationships between layers so that changes you apply to one affect another. Use parenting, hinging, and targeting to link the movement of layers, or to change the way a layer aligns with its motion path. When hinging a layer (A) to another layer (B) after scaling layer A, subsequent scaling of layer B is not reflected in the Scale fields for layer A. For example, you scale layer A to 80%, then hinge it to layer B (which is at 100%). When you scale layer B to 50%, layer A is scaled to 50% of 80% (40% of original size), but the Scale fields show 50%. Note: This behavior also applies to parenting. Parenting Layers Use Parenting to make one layer (the parent layer) control the movement of another (the child layer). Parent list • Click the Parent Pick button, then select a layer in a viewport. The first layer becomes the child layer to the second. When you move, rotate, scale, or shear the parent layer, the child layer is also affected. Note: You can only parent to a layer or object in the current composite. To parent to a null object: 1. Double-click the composite. 2. Select a layer. 3. Choose the Null object from the Parent list in the Composite Controls panel, or click the Pick button and select it in a viewport. The layer becomes the child to the Null object. When you move, rotate, scale, or shear the Null object, the layer is also affected. 136

To constrain the movement to one or more axes,

select the X, Y, and Z options in the Toolbar.

Depending on the view, you can constrain

When you rotate, scale, or shear the layer, the

layer now rotates, scales, or shears around the

new pivot point.

Controlling the Behavior of

Layers

You can create relationships between layers so that

changes you apply to one affect another. Use

parenting, hinging, and targeting to link the

movement of layers, or to change the way a layer

aligns with its motion path.

When hinging a layer (A) to another layer (B) after

scaling layer A, subsequent scaling of layer B is not

reflected in the Scale fields for layer A. For example,

you scale layer A to 80%, then hinge it to layer B

(which is at 100%). When you scale layer B to 50%,

layer A is scaled to 50% of 80% (40% of original

Note:

This behavior also applies to parenting.

Parenting Layers
