For more information on rendering, see "Rendering Your Work" in Chapter 31, "Rendering''. Using Lookup Tables Use the LUT Editor controls in either the Bit Depth Controls panel or the Footage Controls panel. You set the bit depth and enable Use LUT for the Bit Depth Converter operator in the Settings controls. The same settings for the Footage operator are in the Output controls. About the LUT Editor The LUT Editor controls are divided into several areas: • Convert list • Graph (with histogram) • RGB LUT fields • Import and Export buttons • Source and Result swatches These interface elements are described in the following procedures. Using Log to Linear and Linear to Log Conversion There are two other conversion methods with preset curves. Log to Linear-Uses a preset log space to linear space curve for conversion. Usually, this option is used when you are converting Cineon 10-bit log files to linear space of any bit depth. When you import Cineon files, they can be automatically converted from Log to Linear format by enabling Use Log to Linear Conversion in the Combustion Preferences, in the Footage category. Linear to Log-Uses a preset linear space to log space curve for conversion. There are two additional controls for these two methods: • Film Gamma • Soft Clip These two controls do not have the graph gadgets that the other five do. Selecting a Conversion Method The Convert list includes five choices: • Use Imported LUT • Log to Linear • Linear to Log • Straight (default) • Copy Parameters from Operator Using Straight Conversion If you select Straight from the Convert list, the preset straight conversion curve appears. This curve preserves the color space of the original source footage (either linear or log). Typically, you choose this option when you want to work directly in log space from log source material 593
