Using Reflectivity ❚❘❘ Using Reflectivity The amount of reflectivity on a layer controls the amount of mirroring it does of surrounding objects. Reflectivity modes control the way in which the reflection is blended with the original image. The default reflectivity mode is Add. With this option, the RGB values of the reflection's pixels are added to the original source, resulting in a brighter clip. This simulates the effect you might have from reflecting a layer off a white shiny marble floor. Depending on the properties of the material you are trying to mimic with your layer, you will need to play with the reflectivity modes until you find one that is ideal for your scene. To make a layer reflective: 1. Select the layer. 2. In the Surface controls, adjust the Reflectivity slider. The higher the percentage, the more the layer reflects the surrounding scene. Set reflectivity to 100% to simulate a mirror. 3. Select an option from the Reflectivity Mode list. For example, Normal mode produces results similar to a mirror. 4. To see or render the reflections you create, enable Reflections in the Settings controls. Reflectivity on statue layer is set to 100 (below). Reflectivity on statue layer is set to 25 (below). Creating Shadows Shadows in Combustion are not limited to drop shadows-you can add lights and place matted layers to cast shadows on other layers. You can also set layers to cast colored shadows, creating a stainedglass effect. You can go from the fairly simple to the very complex. In the following figure, there is one large spot light below the scene shining upwards, and both layers are rotated on the Y-axis to skew the shadows a bit. In the following figure the light is unchanged, but the layers are flatter to the camera and the right layer was moved closer to the camera (along the Z-axis). 203
