Matching Grain ❚❘❘ The procedure to apply grain with a uniform spatial distribution is the same as the one to apply grain from a film stock except that you must select the B/W option. For more information, see Using BuiltIn Granularity Curves. Note: Another way to achieve uniform spatial distribution is to enable Mono after selecting Custom from the Film Stock list. The curves in the curve editor can still be adjusted. Matching Grain When you add grain to one image (the target image), you can sample grain from another image (the source image) to make the grain throughout the clips in a composite the same. Note: Since the Match Grain picker can be used with built-in granularity curves, some steps in this process apply to using the Kodak emulsion and B/W options. See Using Built-In Granularity Curves for steps specific to these Film Stock options. There are three ways to set up viewports or images to sample grain from another image: • When the current operator is the composite and the source image is in the composite, the viewport can show both the target and source images (due to a matte on the front image or the arrangement of the layers). • If the source image is not visible (or it is not in the composite), you can use the Compare tool and sample from another operator in the workspace. For example, you can sample from a shot in another branch after you set up the viewport to show a region of that image. Note: For information on the Compare tool, see Using the Compare Tool. • Since the Match Grain picker can sample from any viewport, you can set up another viewport to show the source image. This section explains the process for re-graining a clip using the Custom option, as outlined in the following procedure. To sample using the Match Grain picker: 1. Apply the Add Grain operator to the target image (or clip). See Apply the Add Grain Operator. 2. Analyze the grain of the clip you want to match. This is the step where you use the Match Grain picker. See Analyze the Grain. 3. Compare the grain that you want to match. Show the composite in the viewport, set up a Compare region, or use two viewports. See Compare the Grain. 4. Adjust the grain color/intensity if necessary. See Adjust the Luma of the Grain. 5. Adjust the grain size if necessary. See Adjust the Grain Size. Apply the Add Grain Operator You start the process of adding grain the same way regardless if you want to use granularity curves for an existing film stock, or use the Custom option to exactly match the grain of another clip. To begin the process of adding grain: 1. In the composite, select the layer or the operator (such as Footage) to which you want to add grain. 2. Choose Operators | Grain Management | Add Grain. The Add Grain Controls panel appears. 3. Select Custom from the Film Stock list. For more information on the other options, see Using Built-In Granularity Curves. You can still use the Match Grain picker with the other options. 715
