Cutting, Copying, and Pasting Selections ❚❘❘ To contract a selection: 1. Choose Selection | Contract. 2. Enter the radius in the Contract Selection dialog. A Contract Selection object is added to the Timeline list and a dotted line appears on the selection. When you apply an effect, the effect is applied to the area inside the dotted line. Feather field When you apply an effect or a paint stroke, the effect fades gradually and extends past the border of the selection. For example, if you set the pixels to 10, the effect starts to fade at 5 pixels inside the edge, and continues to 5 pixels past the edge of the selection. Expand and Contract Selections Expand or contract the current selection by a number of pixels to fine-tune it. Use this feature to gain greater control over a selection. For example, make a selection with the Magic Wand, and then expand or contract the selection to the exact size that you want. You can modify the stacking order for Expand Selection and Contract Selection Objects. You can also adjust the expand/contract pixel value at any time. To expand a selection: 1. Choose Selection | Expand. 2. Enter the radius in the Expand Selection dialog. An Expand Selection object is added to the list and a dotted line appears on the selection. When you apply an effect, the effect is applied to the area inside the dotted line. Remove Selection When a Remove Selection object is added, it prevents the active selection from affecting any objects above it in the Timeline. For example, the Remove Selection object is added automatically when you paste the contents of a selection to prevent the copied selection from affecting it. You can also manually add a Remove Selection object to deactivate selections in the Timeline. To add a Remove Selection object, select either the Lasso, Rectangular, or Elliptical Selection drawing tool and click in the viewport. Cutting, Copying, and Pasting Selections There are two ways to use cut and copy with selections: you can cut/copy the selection object itself, or you can cut/copy the image that the object is selecting. Note: Cutting, copying, and pasting an image only works when making selections within a Paint operator, not within a selection operator. To make a copy of the selected portion of the image: 1. Draw a selection. You should see the selection marquee, but no bounding box. 513

Cutting, Copying, and Pasting Selections

When you apply an effect or a paint stroke, the

effect fades gradually and extends past the border

of the selection. For example, if you set the pixels

to 10, the effect starts to fade at 5 pixels inside the

edge, and continues to 5 pixels past the edge of

the selection.

Expand and Contract Selections

Expand or contract the current selection by a

number of pixels to fine-tune it. Use this feature to

gain greater control over a selection. For example,

make a selection with the Magic Wand, and then

expand or contract the selection to the exact size that

you want.

Remove Selection

When a Remove Selection object is added, it

prevents the active selection from affecting any

objects above it in the Timeline. For example, the

Remove Selection object is added automatically

when you paste the contents of a selection to prevent

the copied selection from affecting it.

You can also manually add a Remove Selection

object to deactivate selections in the Timeline. To

add a Remove Selection object, select either the

Lasso, Rectangular, or Elliptical Selection drawing

tool and click in the viewport.
