32 Network Rendering Software Requirements A single Combustion license permits you to install Backburner on any number of workstations to configure your render network. Note: If you have already installed Backburner from the Autodesk 3ds Max CD, you need not re-install it unless it is a version prior to Backburner 2008. Older releases of 3ds Max do not provide the most recent version of Backburner. About Installing Backburner Manager At least one workstation must have Backburner Manager installed. This same workstation typically has Backburner Queue Monitor installed. You can also run Backburner Server. In this case, Backburner Manager sends processing tasks to the workstation it is running on. Note: Combustion will take a performance hit if you are using it on a workstation that is also running Backburner Server (provided Backburner Server is receiving incoming tasks). Although it is possible to install and run Backburner Manager on more than one workstation, one installation is usually sufficient, and always easier to manage. The use of multiple managers requires special care and preparation. Running more than one manager rarely results in increased performance or efficiency-the load of the system is limited by the network's physical architecture. You may want to divide the network into logical groups, in which case you would install multiple instances of Backburner Manager-one for each logical group. If you feel your production facility requires a more complex network rendering setup (such as subdividing network topology to run managers independently in their own subnetworks), be sure to work with a qualified network administrator. About Installing Backburner Server All other workstations that you want to participate in network rendering require only the Backburner Server application or service. About Installing Backburner Queue Monitor Install Backburner Queue Monitor on all workstations from which you would like to be able to monitor and control network rendering jobs. Although Backburner Queue Monitor can be started on more than one workstation on the network, the first workstation to start Backburner Queue Monitor and connect to the manager is the only one that can be used to interact with the job queue. All other workstations that start the Backburner Queue Monitor application have read-only access to the job queue. Installing Backburner Applications Software setup typically involves four steps: • Install all Backburner components on one workstation. • Install Backburner Server (application or service) on all other workstations that you want participating in network rendering. • Verify that all workstations are properly configured with the same third-party plug-ins (for example, QuickTime, Video for Windows), the corresponding media codecs, and any fonts used in your Combustion workspaces. • Install Backburner Queue Monitor on any workstation from which you would like to be able to monitor and control network rendering jobs. To install Backburner applications: 1. Log on as Administrator. 2. Insert the Autodesk Combustion 2008 installation CD into the CD-ROM drive. 798
