7 Committing Frames to Disk To use the original operator again: 1. Select the Switcher operator in the Workspace panel, or double-click the Switcher node (in the Schematic view). The Switcher Controls panel appears with buttons representing its input sources. The highlighted button indicates the primary input source, which in this case is the rendered footage operator committed to disk. 2. Click the button that corresponds to the original operator you committed to disk. In this example, Paint is the original operator that was committed to disk. In the Schematic, the original operator now connects to the main input of the Switcher. For more information on the Switcher operator, see Switching Between Inputs. Updating and Managing Committed Footage Committing footage to disk does not restrict you to using the committed footage as the input to nodes downstream. Once you commit footage to disk, you can make changes to the committed operator, rerender the operator, and then do one of two things: • Append the changes to the Switcher. • Update the footage currently connected to the Switcher. Appending Committed Footage to the Switcher Appending committed footage to the Switcher is a good way of comparing outputs. For example, you can make several versions of an operator, commit each version to disk, use the Switcher to compare the versions of the operator committed to disk and decide which version you will use for your project. To append to the Switcher changes to the operator you committed to disk: 1. Select the Switcher operator in the Workspace panel (F3), or double-click the Switcher node (in the Schematic view). 2. In the Switcher Controls panel (F8), click the button that corresponds to the original operator. The operator is displayed in the Workspace panel. In the Schematic view, the operator connection to the Switcher has changed from secondary input to main input. 3. In the Workspace panel (F3) or the Schematic view (F12), double-click the operator to access the operator's control panel. 4. Make the changes to the operator. Since the operator is the main input to the Switcher, changes made to the operator are reflected in the Switcher's thumbnail in the Schematic view (F12). If you want to make additional changes to the operator and be able to use the changes you just made, you need to commit to disk your current changes. This gives you the option of using the original operator (before you did the changes), or the current operator that includes the changes you just made. 190
