B Combustion and 3ds Max Keep in mind that the more channels you render, the larger the rendered file but the quality of the effect achieved is the highest possible. See Creating RPF and RLA Files. Most of the 3D Post effects that use the RPF channels Color, Transparency, and Sub-pixel weight do not require these channels to be present (they are not available for RLA files). If present, the channels are used to improve the quality of the effect. The exception is G-Buffer Extract, which does require the Color channel. When you add a 3D Post filter, Combustion notifies you of any missing, required 3ds Max channels. Use the Show G-Buffer filter to examine the G-Buffer channels in an RPF file. See Show G-Buffer. 3D Depth of Field The 3D Depth of Field filter changes the focus of the image, depending on the Z Depth information in a rich pixel rendering. Note: In Box Blur mode, the 3D Depth of Field effect uses only the Z (Z Depth) channel. In Gaussian Blur mode, you must also use either the Non-Clamped Color or Color channel. The Coverage, Transparency, and Sub-Pixel Weight channels, though not required in Gaussian mode, are suggested. For example, you can create an effect where an object in the foreground is in focus, but the scene gradually becomes blurry towards the part of the scene that is farthest from your point of view. Applying 3D Post Filters In Composite and Paint operators, you can apply 3D Post filters to any layer of a rich pixel rendering. Unlike other kinds of filters, you cannot apply 3D Post filters to grouped layers or to entire composites. Each filter modifies only one layer. Note: Once you have determined which effects you want to add, you need to determine the sequence of the operations. Some 3D Post filter results may interfere with other 3D Post filter results. To apply a 3D Post filter to a rich pixel rendering: 1. Import an RPF or RLA file into a Composite operator, or open the file in a Paint operator. 2. Select the layer you want to filter. 3. From the Operators menu in a composite, or from the Effects menu in Paint, choose 3D Post, and then choose a filter from the menu that appears. Note: Only RPF files support the RPF Motion Blur and Texture Map filters. Focused Planes-The focused planes are the Z Depth at which objects appear in focus. Objects in front of or beyond these plane are blurred. The farther an object from the Focused Plane, the more it appears blurred. Size-The size determines the amount of blur applied to objects which are farthest from the focus plane. As objects get closer to the focus plane, a smaller blur is applied. Blur Type-This is the type of blur used to create the "out of focus" effect. Select either Box or Gaussian Blur. The Gaussian Blur creates a smoother blur, but requires more processing time. 886
