Editing a Clip ❚❘❘ Editing a Clip You can use the Edit operator to edit images and add transitions to segments in a linear fashion. Once you create an Edit operator and add footage to it, you can edit, create cuts and transitions, and if necessary add the output of other operators as segments in the Edit timeline. For more information, see Chapter 15, "Editing Clips''. To open footage into an Edit operator: 1. Choose File | Open (press CTRL+O). The Open dialog appears. 2. Navigate to the folder containing the clip you want to open or edit the path at the top of the Open dialog, and then select the clip. Note: You can scrub the clips in Thumbnails view. To select multiple clips, CTRL-click or SHIFT-click the clips. The selected clip appears in the Open queue. Note: To remove a selected clip, double-click it in the Open queue or click Remove. 3. Click OK (ENTER). The Open Footage dialog appears. An Edit branch is created with the selected footage. A new Edit layer appears in the workspace panel, and the footage appears in the active viewport. By default, the size and duration of the Edit timeline is set to the combined size and duration of all the files selected. To change this, disable Auto Adjust Duration in the Edit operator Output controls. For more information, see "Edit Timeline Controls" in Chapter 15, "Editing Clips''. Note: Clips refer to the original source material on disk. Once they have been imported into the timeline, clips are referred to as segments. 4. Select Edit from the Open Footage options and click OK (ENTER). 5. Click Edit and then click OK. Editing in the Timeline Once you have imported footage into an Edit operator, you can perform edits in the timeline. In the following example, we trim two segments' tail and head, then add a dissolve transition. To trim segments and add a transition in the Edit timeline: 1. In the Timeline controls, enable Ripple. 2. Position the cursor over the tail of the first segment on the timeline until the tail trim cursor appears. 67
