17 Paint: Drawing Basics Reset a weight handle to its maximum or default value: 1. Press CTRL and click the control point associated with the handle. If the current value is not the maximum, it updates to the maximum (3). If the current value is the maximum, it updates to the default value (1). The curve at that control point updates to reflect the new value. 2. If necessary, repeat the procedure to toggle to the maximum/default value. Transforming an Object's Shape Over Time You can change an object's shape by scaling or shearing, and you can transform an object's shape by adding, removing or moving control points. The following example illustrates how to use control points to transform one shape (a square) into another (a star). 1. Choose File | New (CTRL+N) and create a Paint operator Branch with the following settings: • Type: Paint • Format: NTSC DV • Duration: 45 frames 2. In the Paint Toolbar, do one of the following: • In the Paint Toolbar, click the Stroked Rectangle tool or the Filled Rectangle tool , or press the tool's hot key. • In the Paint Toolbar, click-drag the stroked or filled tool and choose the Stroked or Filled Rectangle tool, or press the tool's hot key. 3. In the Paint Modes controls, click the Use Default Foreground and Background Colors button ( ) or press D, and then click the Swap Foreground and Background Colors button ( ) or press X. Default foreground and background color Swap foreground and background colors The background color is white and the foreground color is black. 4. Hold down Shift, click and drag in the viewport to draw a square. 5. Access the control points of the object by doing one of the following: • Click the square object in the viewport and press TAB. • In the Toolbar, click the Arrow tool and then click the Edit Control Points tool option (TAB). • Press TAB twice. 6. Position the cursor over the middle of the square's top horizontal edge. The cursor changes to , indicating you can add a control point. 466
