Creating a Null Object, Aligning Layers

5 Compositing To remove targeting: 1. Select the layer that is targeted. 2. In the Composite Controls panel, select None from the Target list. Creating a Null Object A Null object is an invisible object; it has no pixel information or dimensions, and is not rendered in the final output. If you create a complex motion path for a Null object, for example, you can target the camera to the Null object to follow the path. If you create multiple Null objects, Combustion appends an increasing number (in parentheses) to the name of each. For example, if you create three Null objects, they are named Null Object, Null Object(2), and Null Object(3), by default. You can rename them at any time. To create a null object: 1. Select the composite. 2. Choose Object | New Null Object. A Null object is added at coordinates 0, 0, 0. You can use the tools in the Toolbar or the Transform controls to position and rotate a Null object in the same way as you would a layer. For more information, see Transforming Layers. To delete a null object: 1. Select the Null object. You can select it in the Workspace panel, the Timeline, a viewport, or in the Current list of the Composite Controls panel. 2. Press DELETE. Aligning Layers You can align a layer to its motion path so that a particular axis will be fixed to the path. The layer rotates to maintain the selected axis parallel to the motion path, ignoring any rotation keyframes that would otherwise prevent it from following its course. You can align the path to the X-, Y-, or Z-axis of a layer. To align a layer: 1. Select a layer. Note: To align a layer, you must have created a motion path by animating the layer. For information, see "Creating a Motion Path" in Chapter 12, "Creating Animations''. 2. In the Composite Controls panel, do one of the following: • To align the layer's X-axis to the motion path, click the Align X button. • To align the layer's Y-axis to the motion path, click the Align Y button. • To align the layer's Z-axis to the motion path, click the Align Z button. 138
