32 Network Rendering Backburner Server Controls Backburner Server runs as a foreground process on your desktop and remains active unless specifically shut down. The Backburner Server interface includes a menu bar and a list window. The menu bar provides access to the server properties and display options. The list window displays log information for the network render. File Menu Use the File menu options to either close or shut down the Server. Close-Closes the Server application. The Server continues running, but is minimized to the Windows notification area. Shutdown-Quits the Server application. Edit Menu The Edit menu gives you access to the Backburner Server General Properties and to the Backburner Server Log settings. General Settings-Displays the Backburner Server General Properties dialog. The General Properties dialog contains the configuration settings for the Network Rendering Servers. The default settings should work in most cases, but certain situations may require adjustments. The information specified in the Backburner Server General Properties dialog is contained in the backburner.xml file (in the Network subdirectory). For information on the backburner.xml file, see About the backburner.xml File. If you run the Server and the backburner.xml file does not exist or does not contain information pertinent to the Server, the backburner.xml file is created or updated. The Manager and Server Port numbers specify the port numbers to be used by the software. These numbers must be unique to the software, but every Server must use the same port number. Manager Port-Specifies the port number used by the network Manager. Server Port-Specifies the port number used by the network Server(s). Note: Port numbers are like extensions for different users of the same phone number. They represent two channels of communication between the Server and the Manager. Only a trained network administrator should change these settings. Automatic Search-When enabled, the Server searches for a Manager using the default subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. In most cases, you should leave this option on. The software will detect the workstation acting as a Manager. If Automatic Search is disabled, you need to specify the IP address or DNS name of the Manager to connect to. Use the Manager's name or IP address when multiple Managers are running on the same subnet. Use the Manager's IP address to avoid any problems or conflicts caused by improper implementation of the Domain Name System. Note: The Server may fail to detect a Manager if the network subnet mask (in the Windows TCP/IP Network Configuration dialog) is set to some other value than the standard 255.255.255.0. If that is the case, change the subnet mask setting to match that setting. Start the Server again and it should detect the Manager. 808

Backburner Server Controls

Backburner

Server runs as a foreground process on

your desktop and remains active unless specifically

shut down. The

Backburner

Server interface includes

a menu bar and a list window. The menu bar

provides access to the server properties and display

options. The list window displays log information

for the network render.

File Menu

Use the File menu options to either close or shut

down the Server.

—Closes the Server application. The Server

continues running, but is minimized to the

Windows notification area.

Shutdown

—Quits the Server application.

Edit Menu

The Edit menu gives you access to the

Backburner

Server General Properties and to the

Backburner

Server Log settings.

General Settings

—Displays the

Backburner

Server General Properties dialog. The General

Properties dialog contains the configuration settings

for the Network Rendering Servers.

The default settings should work in most cases, but

certain situations may require adjustments. The

information specified in the

Backburner

Server

General Properties dialog is contained in the

backburner.xml

file (in the

Network

subdirectory).
