Controlling the Behavior of Layers ❚❘❘ Note: This procedure assumes you have already created a Null object in the composite. For information, see Creating a Null Object. To remove parenting: 1. Select the child layer. 2. In the Composite Controls panel, select None from the Parent list. Hinging Layers Hinging links the edges of two layers similarly to the way a door attaches to a wall. The first (or hinged) layer becomes the child of the second layer. If you move the parent layer, the hinged layer moves to keep the link to the parent layer. To hinge layers: 1. Select a layer by doing one of the following: • Select a layer in the Workspace panel. • Click Transform in the Composite Controls panel and select a layer from the Current list. • Click Layer in the Composite Controls panel and select a layer from the Hinge list. 2. In the Composite Layer controls, click the Hinge Pick button, then select the second layer from a viewport or from the Hinge list. Target Pick button Hinge list The closest edges of the layers are automatically hinged. The layer you hinged snaps to the nearest edge of the parent layer and its pivot point moves to align along the hinged edge. You can rotate the hinged layer along one axis only. To unhinge layers: 1. Select the hinged layer. 2. In the Layer controls, select None from the Hinge list. Targeting Layers Use Targeting to point one layer at another, no matter where it is in your scene. When a layer targets another, it rotates so that its Z-axis is always pointed at the pivot point of the other layer. This can be particularly useful when creating animations. You can also create a null object that you can use as the target, or target layers to lights and the camera (and vice versa). To target a layer: 1. Select the layer. 2. In the Composite Controls panel, select the layer or object that you want to set as the target from the Target list, or click the Target Pick button and select it in a viewport. Target Pick button The layer is targeted to the selected layer. When you move the target, the layer rotates to point at it. To target to a null object: 1. Choose Object | New Null Object. 2. Double-click the composite. 3. Select a layer. 4. Choose the Null object from the Target list, or click the Target Pick button and select it in a viewport. You can now move the Null object. If necessary, the layer changes rotation to point at it. 137

Hinging Layers
