22 Working with Bit Depth Using View LUTs Computer monitors can only display 8 bits per channel. (This setting results from the monitor's display adapter and settings.) Usually, you would set the display adapter to "True Color", or a 16, 777, 216 color palette. This number equals a bit depth of 8 for the three color channels. When you want to use the monitor to display a higher bit depth, you use a view LUT to display the higher bit depth in the 8-bit color space by mapping the colors. The image data is not affected by the conversion. Using the view LUT is also useful for leaving footage in logarithmic color space from input to output (import to rendering) while displaying the data in a linear way in the viewport. Specifically, this lets you work with Cineon and DPX files without converting from logarithmic color space. Finally, you can use a view LUT to calibrate a monitor. To help you with this, the View LUT panel includes a feature for displaying test patterns. Applying a View LUT You can apply a view LUT to any viewport showing an operator. There are five storage buttons on the View LUT panel; you can choose any one to store your settings, and then you can apply that view LUT at any time. Note: The storage settings are saved with the workspace; in the next Combustion session, the five storage buttons are empty. To apply a view LUT: 1. Select a viewport. The controls on the View LUT panel are unavailable when the Schematic or Footage Library views are showing. The menu options are also removed from the Window menu. 2. To apply a view LUT, choose Window | View LUT, and then choose 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5. If the corresponding storage is empty, the View LUT panel appears. The shortcut keys are SHIFT+1 to SHIFT+5. They allow easy switching to a boosted set of gamma adjustment. For example, you can check the black levels in areas of an image that are difficult to see, then you can quickly return to the previous setting. 3. To display the View LUT panel and edit a view LUT, choose Window | View LUT | Edit LUT. Note: You can also show the View LUT panel and enable Use LUT to edit /apply a view LUT. To stop using a view LUT: 1. Select the viewport where you want to stop using a view LUT. 2. Choose Window | View LUT | None, or press SHIFT+0. Note: You can also show the View LUT panel and disable Use LUT. To show or hide the View LUT panel: Choose Window | Palettes, and then choose either Show View LUT or Hide View LUT, or press F10. Note: When you choose Window | View LUT | Edit LUT, or when you choose an empty storage from the View LUT menu, the View LUT panel appears even if it is hidden. Editing View LUTs Use the View LUT panel to set the view LUT conversion method and settings. You can also store up to five view LUTs for quick access later. The three conversion methods for view LUTs are Straight, Film Look, and Use Imported LUT. The last one simply uses the Gamma, Gain, and Offset settings from a previously exported LUT setup file. 600
