In the Audio panel, the path and filename of the audio source appear, and a waveform is generated. Supported Audio File Types The three standard formats for audio are WAV, AIFF and MP3. The WAV and AIFF formats are uncompressed formats whereas MP3 is a compressed format. Combustion can work with all three types. WAV-an uncompressed audio file format created by Microsoft that has become a standard PC audio file format. Used primarily in PCs, the Wave file format has been accepted as a viable interchange medium for other computer platforms, such as Macintosh. This allows content developers to freely move audio files between platforms for processing. In addition to the uncompressed raw audio data, the Wave file format stores information about the file's number of tracks (mono or stereo), sample rate, and bit depth. AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format)-an uncompressed file format for storing digital audio (waveform) data. It supports a variety of bit resolutions, sample rates, and audio channels. The format was developed by Apple Computer and is the standard format for audio CD production. MP3 (MPEG-1, Layer 3)-a compressed file format that saves storage space at the expense of audio quality. Windows Media Player, which is included with the Windows operating system, can play MP3 files. Combustion also supports loading audio that is embedded in Video for Windows (.avi), QuickTime (.mov), and MPEG (.mpg) files. When an audio file is loaded into a Combustion workspace, the audio is copied to the workspace and cached to RAM. You can also use the QuickTime Streaming format for audio. 743
