11 Timewarping To zoom: Press CTRL and drag. To pan: Press ALT and drag. Using the Timewarp Operator You can use the Timewarp operator to create both constant and variable timewarps. To create a timewarp: 1. Choose Operators | Timewarp. The Timewarp Controls panel appears. 2. Use the Curve Editor and/or the Timing, Speed, and Interpolation controls to create the timewarp. There is no single or recommended way to use these elements to create a timewarp. For an example, see Creating a Constant Speed Timewarp. If you want to create a variable speed timewarp, the best way to get a feel for how the curves work is to add keyframes to the timing curve, then manipulate the curves by moving the keyframes and/or the tangents of the keyframes, and finally, play the footage back to see the effect. If you want to discard the timewarp and start fresh at any point, click Reset All. Creating a Constant Speed Timewarp This timewarp plays the footage at half-speed. It does not vary the playback speed at any point, thus is a constant speed timewarp. To create the constant speed timewarp: 1. Choose Operators | Timewarp. The Timewarp Controls panel appears. The timing curve is a straight line that indicates there is no timewarp effect (each frame number along the Y axis maps to the same frame number along the X axis). The speed curve is also a straight line that indicates there is no variation in speed during the timewarp. The current frame bar is positioned at the last frame of the footage. 2. Do one of the following: • Enable the Lock button to the right of the Speed box (the icon should be a closed lock), then set the value of the Speed box to 50. • Set the value of the Duration box to 300. This increases the duration of the timewarp. 3. Use the Playback controls to play back the timewarp effect. At the end of the timewarp, the source footage is at frame 75; only half of the source footage has played. Thus the operator that follows the Timewarp operator in the branch will receive only the first half of the source footage. If you wanted to pass on all of the frames in the source footage, you would adjust the length of the footage the branch outputs. For example, if the branch is a Composite branch, you would change the length in the Composite Controls to 300. Note that the opposite case occurs if you had created a timewarp to play the footage double speed: at frame 75 of the output you reach the last frame of the source footage. Again, you must decide the number of frames you want the branch to output and adjust it accordingly. 270
