The Modes controls in the Paint Controls panel

change depending on the tool selected in the Toolbar

or on the object selected in the viewport.

For example, if you are drawing a selection object,

the Combine Mode list shows Replace (=), Add (+),

Subtract (-), and Intersect (x). If you select a

rectangular paint object, the Draw Mode list appears

instead of the Combine Mode list.
