System Requirements and Setup ❚❘❘ System Requirements and Setup Installation and configuration must be done with care to ensure trouble-free communication between Backburner Manager and all Backburner Server installations. Once configured, however, using Backburner is easy. The following sections describe the hardware, software, and network requirements, including information on setting up TCP/IP. Hardware Requirements All workstations that you want participating in network rendering should meet the minimum requirements for running Combustion. Clearly, faster processors, more memory, and more swap space will increase performance. Workstations must have network cards and be connected properly. Make sure you inspect cards, cables, and connections for all workstations to avoid common troubleshooting issues. When configuring a render network, all workstations should have a display monitor. This allows you to verify messages broadcast through Backburner Server that indicate successful communication with Backburner Manager. Once the network has been properly configured, however, render-only workstations do not require a display monitor. Display adapters and accelerators have no impact on rendering performance, unless you choose to render using OpenGL. OpenGL rendering is recommended only for preview purposes-it is faster, but results are not as good as software rendering. To render over the network using OpenGL, make sure all render workstations have identical OpenGL cards and drivers. Overview of the Backburner Client-server Network Rendering System Combustion or stand-alone Render Queue Backburner Queue Monitor Queue Monitor controls the manager and the servers. It monitors, suspends, and reorders jobs. It also breaks job dependencies and reassigns jobs to specific servers. Render clients send jobs to the Manager. Backburner Manager Manager distributes tasks to the servers. Backburner Server Backburner Server Backburner Server Output Servers render frames and send the frames to an output folder. 797
