17 Paint: Drawing Basics • In the Modes controls of the Paint Controls panel, click the foreground color box, and in the Color Picker dialog, select a color, then click OK or press ENTER. Foreground color box Sampling Colors You can pick a color in the Swatches panel or sample a pixel (or range of pixels) from an operator displayed in the viewport using the Color Picker tool in the Paint Controls panel. The Color Picker tool is available in the Modes, Gradient, and Shadow controls, and the sampled color can be loaded into either the foreground or background color box. When you sample a range of colors, an average of all sampled colors is loaded into the color box. To sample a pixel: 1. Select the viewport from which you want to pick a color, if it is not already selected. Note: You can pick a color from any operator displayed in the viewport. 2. In the Paint Modes controls, click the Color Picker tool or press Y. 3. Move the cursor over the pixel you want to sample and then click. The sampled color appears in the foreground color box. You can now use it with any selected drawing tool. The color is also applied to all selected objects. 4. To change the background color, hold down ALT as you select the new color. To sample a range of pixels: 1. Select the viewport from which you want to pick a color, if it is not already selected. 2. In the Paint Modes controls, click the Color Picker tool or press Y. 3. Do either of the following: • Press SHIFT and draw a selection box over the area containing the colors you want to sample. The average color is loaded into the foreground color box. You can now use it with any selected drawing tool. The color is also applied to all selected objects. • In the Toolbar, enable Area Sample and then click in the area containing the colors you want to sample. The average color of the 3 x 3 pixel block around the clicked pixel is loaded into the foreground color box. You can now use it with any selected drawing tool. In the Modes controls of the Paint Controls

panel, click the foreground color box, and in the

Color Picker dialog, select a color, then click OK

Sampling Colors

You can pick a color in the Swatches panel or sample

a pixel (or range of pixels) from an operator

displayed in the viewport using the Color Picker tool

in the Paint Controls panel.

The Color Picker tool is available in the Modes,

color can be loaded into either the foreground or

background color box.

When you sample a range of colors, an average of all
