Using Render Elements ❚❘❘ composite is generated with one layer for each element you selected. When you open the workspace file in Combustion, you can fine-tune the layers. For example, you can color-correct the Diffuse layer or animate the opacity of the Self-Illumination layer. Since the image is split up into these layers, you can also produce creative results by adding various operators to the separate layers. These are the elements you can render from a 3D scene: • Background (background of the scene) • Diffuse (color of the objects in direct lighting) • Reflection (scene reflected onto the surface of the object) • Refraction (scene mapped onto the surface of the object in a way that looks like you are seeing it through the surface, rather than reflected off of it) • Self-Illumination (an object appears to glow from within; the object is not affected by lights in the scene and does not receive shadows) • Shadow (shadows cast by lights in the scene; saves only black and white shadow information) • Specular (color of shiny highlights) • Atmosphere (the atmospheric effects in the rendering, such as fog and fire) • Blend (a custom combination of render elements) • Z Depth (a grayscale representation of the depth within the view of objects within the scene) To render scene elements from 3ds Max: 1. In the Render Setup dialog, set the filename, path, and format. Note: You must select a format that includes an alpha channel such as TARGA. In the Render Output group, Save File is automatically enabled since a filename, path and format have been set. When Save File is enabled, 3ds max renders the complete scene (not just the selected elements). 2. You can disable Save File if you only want the render elements. The Render Elements feature uses this filename as the basis for the names of the rendered element image files. This feature eliminates the need to individually name the files. 3. Expand the Render Elements rollout. 4. Click Add to add an element using the Render Elements dialog. Note: Any element in the Render Elements list can be enabled or disabled using the Enable option in the Selected Element Parameters group. 5. In the Render Elements rollout, ensure Elements Active and Display Elements are enabled. Elements Active must be enabled for the elements in the list to be rendered. When Elements Active is disabled, all the selected Render Elements are off. Although not required, enabling Display Elements displays each rendered element in its own virtual frame buffer for previewing. 6. In the Render Scene dialog, expand the MAX Default Scanline A-Buffer rollout and ensure Anti-Aliasing in the Anti-Aliasing group is enabled and the Filter Size is set to 0.0. 7. Enable Output to Combustion and click Files. The *.cws dialog appears. Notice the file type is already set to Combustion Files. 8. Enter a filename and location, and click Save. 9. In the Render Scene dialog, click Render. The Rendering dialog displays the render status of the scene, and the virtual frame buffer for the scene builds. When rendering is finished, the 893
