System Requirements and Setup ❚❘❘ Network Requirements All workstations need to be: • Operational under the current version of Windows 2000 or Windows XP. • Connected over a network with TCP/IP protocol properly installed. Basic TCP/IP information is provided in the following section. For details, you should consult your Windows documentation. Setting Up TCP/IP Backburner communicates over the standard network protocol-Transport Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). TCP sends data between applications whereas IP communicates data between an application and the physical network. Each workstation in your render network must be configured for this protocol. TCP/IP requires a device, called a network adapter or Network Interface Controller (NIC) to communicate with other computers. Typically, the network adapter is an Ethernet card, but if you are linked to the Internet by modem, a dial-up adapter (the modem) is used. Note: If you do not have a network card or modem, you can still use network rendering to process batch rendering by configuring your TCP/IP settings to use the Loopback adapter, a software adapter supplied by Microsoft. TCP/IP uses IP addresses to identify the computers on a network. For convenience, you can assign real names to computers. An IP address is a serial number of four integers separated by periods, for example, 192.100.100.1. TCP/IP setup should be performed by your network administrator. To set up TCP/IP, you must have: • Administrative privileges on each computer. • An operational network, with a network adapter card installed in each computer. Configuring TCP/IP The network may already be set up. If not: • Decide if you are using fixed addresses or dynamically supplied addresses. See Fixed Addresses or DHCP. • If you are using fixed addresses, create a list of workstation names and IP addresses. See Workstation Names and IP Addresses. • Decide if the workstations will be set up in a workgroup or domain. See Workgroup or Domain. • For each workstation, assign the name and the workgroup or domain. • Add the TCP/IP, then configure it (in DHCP mode or with fixed addresses). See your Windows documentation for instructions. Fixed Addresses or DHCP IP addresses can be fixed (the address you assign remains constant) or automatic, meaning it is supplied dynamically each time you connect to the network by a system known as the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). The software uses the Media Access Control (MAC) address, which can be considered as a unique serial number assigned to each network card, to identify each computer in the network. This allows the use of DHCP since the IP address changes when a computer using DHCP is rebooted. In some cases, you may want to specify a fixed IP address: • When you have more than one manager running on the same network, each with its own set of dedicated servers and you need to specify which manager to use. DHCP can be used in this case, but 801

Network Requirements

All workstations need to be:

Setting Up TCP/IP

Backburner

communicates over the standard

Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). TCP sends data

between applications whereas IP communicates data

between an application and the physical network.

Each workstation in your render network must be

configured for this protocol.
