Preparing a Job ❚❘❘ flooding the manager with connections when you start multiple servers at once. By broadcasting their presence, the manager can connect to each one at its own pace. It also prevents the problem of a maximum of 10 connections artificially imposed on Windows operating systems (unless you are running one of their server offerings). Because of this, only one manager can be active when servers are instructed to automatically connect to the manager. If more than one manager is active, multiple managers would attempt connections and the distribution of servers would be random. When the server is set to connect to one specific manager, it advertises its presence to that manager only. This allows you to have multiple managers managing clusters of servers. To connect to the manager manually: 1. In the Backburner Server dialog, choose Edit | General Settings. The Backburner Server General Properties dialog is displayed. 2. Do one of the following: • Check that the manager port and server port match the values set in the Backburner Manager General Properties dialog. • Disable Automatic Search and enter the manager name (or IP address). To find the name or IP address, go to the workstation running Backburner Manager. • Check that the subnet mask matches the settings for your network. To find the workstation's name, choose Start | Settings | Control Panel | System. In the System Properties dialog, click the Network Identification tab and then click Properties. To find the workstation's IP address or subnet mask, use cmd.exe (the command prompt, accessible by choosing Start | Run) and type ipconfig. If the message "Could not find a Manager. Will keep trying..." or "Manager is not responding" appears in the Backburner Server dialog list, see Troubleshooting Guide. Preparing a Job Once the render manager and servers are started, start Combustion or the standalone Render queue and prepare a workspace so you can submit it as a network rendering job. To prepare a network rendering job: 1. Start Combustion or the standalone Render Queue on a workstation on the render network. 2. Open the workspace file you want to render. 3. If you are using Combustion, Choose File | Render (CTRL+R) to open the Render Queue. 4. Set render options for as many outputs as you need, including the output file type. For more information, see "Rendering Your Work" in Chapter 31, "Rendering''. 5. Make sure public input and output paths are set up for network rendering. For more information, see Setting Up Input/ Output Folders for more information. Public output paths override the output path set in the Output Settings controls. The filename set in the Output Settings controls, however, is used for the network rendering output. 823
