5 Compositing 3. Move the Current Time indicator to the frame at which you want to split the layer. 4. Choose Edit | Split Layer (CTRL+SHIFT+D). The selected layer is split into two independent layers. The original layer's out point and the new layer's in point are at the current frame. When you split a layer, both resulting layers contain the original layer's operators and keyframes in their original positions. When you play the clip, the new layers appears to be one continuous layer. Working with 2D Composites Many common compositing scenarios do not require the full feature set of 3D space. By creating a 2D composite or switching a 3D composite to 2D, you can speed up the rendering. 2D and 3D composites can exist within the same workspace, so the compositing mode is very flexible. You can even mix the two modes when you nest composites (for example, the layers of a 2D composite can be nested 3D composites). You can switch between 2D and 3D compositing at any time, but some of the work you do in 3D may affect the 2D result or may be ignored. Creating a 2D Composite There are several scenarios where you set the compositing mode to 2D or 3D: • When you create a composite branch • When you create a composite as a new layer for a composite • When you open footage into a composite When you nest a 3D composite in a 2D composite, the nested 3D composite becomes a layer of the 2D composite with all the restrictions 2D compositing entails. However, the layers of the nested 3D composite are still 3D. You can always change the compositing mode later. To create a 2D composite: 1. Choose File | New. The New dialog appears. 2. Select Composite from the Type list. 3. Enable the 2D Mode button. 4. Click OK. An empty 2D composite appears in the viewport. 144
