Duplicating and Moving Layers ❚❘❘ Changing the Duration of a Layer You can change the duration of a layer by stretching or compressing the layer's footage. When a footage is stretched, frames are added; when it is compressed, frames are removed. For example, if you stretch a 1minute clip so that it plays for 2 minutes, Combustion duplicates every frame. If you compress a 1-minute clip so that it plays for 30 seconds, Combustion removes half the frames. You can use Frame Blending to create new frames by using interpolation. Otherwise, new frames are duplicates of the original frames. Enable Frame Blending in the Footage Controls panel. For detailed information, see "Changing Footage Output Settings" in Chapter 4, "Building Workspaces''. Duplicating and Moving Layers In Combustion, you can easily duplicate and move layers within a composite, between composites on different branches, or between nested composites. If you copy a layer in the Workspace panel and then paste it, all of its properties (settings, footage, and any operators) are copied as well. However, if you duplicate a layer using the Duplicate command, the new layer links to the original footage and operators. In other words, the layer instances the operators. For information on moving layers within a composite, see Reordering Layers. To copy a layer to another composite: 1. Select the layer, and do one of the following: • Right-click and choose Copy. • Choose Edit | Copy (CTRL+C). Note: To select multiple layers, SHIFT-click or CTRL-click each layer or drag a selection box around the layers in the Timeline or Workspace panel. 2. Select the composite into which you want to paste the layer, and do one of the following: • Right-click and choose Paste. • Choose Edit | Paste (CTRL+V). The layer is copied to the new location. To duplicate a layer: 1. Select the layer. 2. Do one of the following: • Right-click and choose Duplicate. • Choose Edit | Duplicate (CTRL+ALT+D). An instance of the layer is created in the composite. To move a layer between composites: 1. Select the layer. 2. Choose Edit | Cut (CTRL+X). The layer is removed from the composite. 3. Select the composite into which you want to paste the layer. 4. Choose Edit | Paste (CTRL+V). The layer is pasted in the new location. Editing Layers in the Timeline Besides reordering layers and operators in the Workspace panel or Timeline, compositing frequently requires modifying the temporal position of layers. In Combustion, you can: • Move a layer in time. • Trim a layer to define the viewable portion of the layer. • Slip a layer to set a layer's visibility relative to the duration of the composite or relative to the duration of its footage operator. • Split a layer at any point along the Timeline, to create two independent layers. Changing the Duration of a Layer

You can change the duration of a layer by stretching

or compressing the layer’s footage. When a footage is

stretched, frames are added; when it is compressed,

frames are removed. For example, if you stretch a 1-

minute clip so that it plays for 2 minutes,

duplicates every frame. If you compress

a 1-minute clip so that it plays for 30 seconds,

Combustion

removes half the frames.

You can use Frame Blending to create new frames by
