31 Rendering Allocating More RAM to Combustion Your ability to play back clips in real time is controlled by the amount of memory on your system, the amount available to Combustion, and the amount allocated for caching. The number of frames that you can render to RAM depends on the resolution, color depth, and size of the images. You can increase the maximum amount of memory Combustion can use for caching. Macintosh OS X has dynamic memory allocation. Note: Another preference related to RAM is the Render Cache Size for the Paint operator. For details, see "Setting Paint Preferences" in Chapter 2, "Welcome to Combustion''. To increase the cache usage: 1. Choose File | Preferences (CTRL+;). The Preferences dialog appears. 2. In the Host category, select Caching. The Caching preferences appear. 3. Enter a value in the Maximum Cache Usage field. The value initially appears in percentage of the total available memory. You can also select MBytes from the adjacent list to set the number of megabytes. 4. Click OK. For the Macintosh, the amount of memory that appears on the Combustion status bar is approximately 70% of the value in the Maximum Cache Usage field (in the preferences). For example, if you set the Preferred Size to 400000 KB, and leave Maximum Cache Usage at 100%, the value on the status bar is 274 MB. Format Options The sections that follow describe the format options and available compression settings in Combustion. For information on setting these options when rendering, see Choosing an Image Format. BMP Sequence Bitmap is an image format from Microsoft that is generally used for stills. These files cannot contain alpha channel information. This format does not have any customizable settings. Cineon Sequence Use the Cineon Options dialog to choose the related settings for a Cineon image sequence. Note: If you click Process to begin rendering before setting these options, Combustion will prompt you to do so before continuing. Cineon® is intended for use with film material, but can be used elsewhere. When you render, you have a choice between three options: • Bypass LUT-Do not render with Lookup Table information. • Use Imported LUT-Click Browse to find the LUT file with the settings you want to use. • Use Custom LUT-Set your own values for Reference White, Reference Black, and so on. Note: Cineon files cannot contain alpha information. For more information about Lookup Tables and the Cineon format, see Chapter 22, "Working with Bit Depth''. DPX Sequence DPX files are similar to Cineon files. One difference is that DPX files have timecode in them. These files cannot contain alpha channel information. 786

Allocating More RAM to Combustion

Your ability to play back clips in real time is

controlled by the amount of memory on your

You can increase the maximum amount of memory
