23 Keying Displaying a Solid Color Background While creating the key, you can view the composite using a solid color for the background in place of the back clip. This can help you see details in the image, such as color spill or artifacts from the background that you may otherwise miss. You can use the default color (white), or select a color using the color picker. Note: This view does not affect the final render. To use a solid color background: 1. In the Setup controls, click the Comp color box, and then select a color using the Pick Color dialog that appears. 2. In the Output options, click Comp. Setting the Range to Key Out The following sections describe three common keying techniques: • Extracting a single color from the key-in clip. • Extracting a range of colors to be keyed out in the key-in clip. • Building a key according to the clip's luminance values. Extracting a Single Color Use the channel mode to extract one of the three primary colors or extract a custom color sampled from the clip. This option can give especially good results when keying transparencies such as glass or smoke. To pull a key by extracting a primary color: 1. In the Keyer Controls panel, click Key. 2. Select Channel from the Keyer Mode list. The Channel controls appear. In the viewports, the front layer is displayed against a solid background. For more information on Keyer outputs, see Global Keyer Controls. 3. Select the color to key out (Red, Green, or Blue) from the Channel Color list. 4. Adjust the softness of the key. The softness value determines how much of the key-in clip is partially transparent in the matte. Softness is used to create a smoother transition between the front and back clips in the composite clip. 5. Enable More to increase the softness around the edge of the key. 618
