16 Introduction to Paint The Brushes palette updates as you create the custom brush, even if Update is disabled. However, some changes may not appear until you click Refresh. You can enable Update to update the Brushes palette in real time. Note: If required, disable Update to increase system performance. Stage Lights particle emitter The brush source is linked to the custom brush until you choose to commit it. Changes you make to the CustomBrush Paint branch are reflected in the custom brush. Freehand stroke in Paint using custom brush ▲ If you want to later modify the brush source, make sure to save the workspace before closing it. If the brush source is not saved, the brush is saved in the brush set but it cannot be edited. However, you can modify the brush attributes (Size, Aspect, Angle, and so on). The brush is saved in the Brushes palette. You can use the custom brush to paint as you would any other brush. Creating Brushes from Footage You can create a customized brush by importing footage into a Paint branch and then using the Paint tools to draw on or mask out part of the image. If you choose to import an image sequence, a single image is imported. By default, the first image in the sequence is imported. If you want to use another image in the sequence, you need to select the image to import. To create a brush from footage: 1. Select Custom from the Shape list. The Brush Source controls appear. 2. Click Open footage into Paint. The Import Footage dialog appears. 3. Choose the footage you want to use as your custom brush. 434
