Monitoring Network Jobs ❚❘❘ Note: Use All Available Servers is also in the Servers controls. When Use All Available Servers is enabled, servers started after the job is submitted can also be used. By default, the job has no dependencies. 4. To create a dependency, enable Use Job Dependency, then click Choose or click Job Links to show the Job Links controls. From the Job Dependencies list, select the job that must be completed before the current job starts. If necessary, click Refresh. The list shows all active jobs. The box next to a job name is highlighted in yellow when there is a dependency. 5. To set notification options, enable Notification in the Main controls. You can set notification options for render completion, render failures, or when a specific number of frames is rendered. You can also have an e-mail message sent to notify you of results or progress. 6. Click Net Render. The outputs are validated and the job is submitted to the manager. The Combustion Render Queue dialog closes. However, if any information is missing from the render settings, a file browser or format settings dialog appears. For example, the JPEG Options dialog appears if you forget to set the options for a JPEG image sequence. The manager breaks up the submitted job into tasks and distributes the tasks to the available render servers. There is a fairly complex algorithm deciding what to send to whom. The system monitors how long servers take to process tasks. If they process tasks quickly, blocks of tasks are sent to these servers as the overhead of assigning the tasks becomes an issue. Backburner also has a "one minute" rule. If a server takes 30 seconds to complete a task, Backburner sends two tasks to the server. If a server takes five seconds to complete a task, Backburner sends 12 tasks to the server, and so on. This is all computed to make the most efficient use of all the resources. It is by far more efficient to keep five servers busy with a 200-task job when they take five seconds to complete each task than trying to assign this job to 200 servers. 7. To view the progress of the job, start the Backburner Queue Monitor or go to the workstation where the Backburner Queue Monitor is running. Note: Render progress is not displayed in the Render Queue dialog on the workstation that submitted the job. The Progress settings in step 6 refer to the progress the Backburner Queue Monitor reports. Backburner Queue Monitor also provides controls for managing network rendering jobs.
