Shearing Layers By default, the angles at the corners of a layer are all 90 degrees. You can use the Shear tool to increase or decrease this value, changing the shape of a layer along one or more axes. Transforming Layers ❚❘❘ Unsheared layer Layer sheared -15 degrees along the Y-axis Note: The placement of the pivot point affects how a layer is sheared. See Changing the Pivot Point. To shear a layer: 1. Select the layer. 2. To set the shear values of the layer, click the Transform button and do one of the following: • Scrub the X, Y, and Z Shear fields, or enter values in the Shear fields. • Double-click the Shear fields and enter the values in the Enter position dialogs. • Double-click the Shear tool in the Toolbar and change the Shear values in the Shear dialog. 3. To return to the default values, click the Shear Reset button. 4. To shear the layer in a viewport, if not selected, click the Shear tool in the Toolbar and then drag the layer in a viewport. Note: Left-click and drag to shear along the X and Y axes. Right-click a and drag to shear on the Zaxis. 5. To constrain the movement to one or more axes, select the X, Y, and Z options in the Toolbar. Changing the Pivot Point The pivot point is the axis point around which the layer rotates, scales, or shears. By default, it is placed in the center of a layer. However, you can move this point anywhere in your scene. For example, move it to the side of a layer to cause the layer to rotate around its edge, or move it off of the layer entirely to create a "pole" around which the layer rotates. The pivot point is represented by the yellow axes that appear when the layer is selected. To change the pivot point: 1. Select the layer. 2. To set the pivot values of the layer, click the Transform button and do one of the following: • Scrub the X, Y, and Z Pivot fields, or enter values in the Pivot fields. • Double-click the Pivot fields and enter the values in the Enter position dialogs. • Double-click the Pivot tool in the Toolbar and change the Pivot values in the Pivot dialog. 3. To return to the default values, click the Pivot Reset button. 4. To pivot the layer in a viewport, if not selected, click the Pivot tool in the Toolbar and then drag the layer in a viewport. Note: You can nudge the position of the pivot point by using the arrow keys on the keyboard. 135

Shearing Layers

By default, the angles at the corners of a layer are all

90 degrees. You can use the Shear tool to increase or

decrease this value, changing the shape of a layer

along one or more axes.

Note:

The placement of the pivot point affects how a

layer is sheared. See

Changing the Pivot Point

To shear a layer:

Select the layer.

To set the shear values of the layer, click the

Transform button and do one of the following:

•

Scrub the X, Y, and Z Shear fields, or enter values

in the Shear fields.

•

Double-click the Shear fields and enter the

values in the Enter position dialogs.

•

Double-click the Shear tool

in the Toolbar

and change the Shear values in the Shear dialog.

To return to the default values, click the Shear

Reset

button.

To shear the layer in a viewport, if not selected,

click the Shear tool

in the Toolbar and then

drag the layer in a viewport.

Note:

Left-click and drag to shear along the X and

Y axes. Right-click a and drag to shear on the Z-

axis.
