Note: Although it is possible to run both server and manager on a same computer, it is not advisable to do so on a system with 20 or more servers. • When the Server or Manager application is outside the local network (as in the case of a WAN or a multi-segmented network connected through a router). Servers connected to the same network can still use DHCP, provided the manager has a fixed name and IP address. • When your network is set peer-to-peer without a Windows server (as is the case with most home networks). In this case, it is easier to set the workstation with fixed IP addresses. With fixed addresses, it is important that IP addresses be properly assigned. You make up a list of workstation names and their corresponding IP addresses to use during TCP/IP configuration. The list will also be used when installing the software's rendering services. Using the manager name is particularly useful when its IP address is assigned dynamically via DHCP and can change from session to session. On a closed network, conflicts with the IP addresses of other network domains are unlikely. However, the addresses need to follow a consistent pattern and each must be unique within the network. ▲ On open networks, such as those in many large corporations, do not alter IP addresses, workstation names, workgroup names, or domain names in any way. To avoid potentially disastrous consequences, always work with your system administrator to make IP address changes. Workstation Names and IP Addresses If you are starting with workstations not connected to a network, you can create a list of workstation names and IP addresses. For example, you could use the following naming convention as a guide: Workstation Name server001 server002 server003 ... server254 IP Address 192.168.100.1 192.168.100.2 192.168.100.3 ... 192.168.100.254 Like an IP address, each name must be unique. Remember, you must not use the numbers 0 or 255 in the last group (or octet) of an IP address as they are reserved. ▲ Workstation names should not start with numbers, and should not contain spaces or underscores. Improper workstation names will result in illegal names in TCP/IP and cause unexpected behavior in network rendering. The maximum number of servers per network subnet mask is 253 for a Class C subnet. For network rendering with more than 253 workstations, additional subnet masks are required. Please refer to the appropriate technical documentation. ▲ Use only the subnet mask specified by your network administrator.
