5 Compositing Use Additive Lighting-Emulates in the OpenGL preview the lighting created by the software renderer in Combustion. Normally (and when this option is enabled), if you project two lights onto a surface, the entire surface becomes brighter where the lighted areas intersect. When Use Additive Lighting is disabled, pixels on the surface do not increase in brightness to show the lighting, so the image outside the intersection of the spotlights is darkened instead. Note: As always, Shading must be enabled to see any lighting effects on the layers. With this option enabled, the lighting is slower but more accurate. To see the difference in quality, create a composite with one layer and two spotlights, and rotate or move the lights to overlap on the surface. With Use Additive Lighting disabled, switch to the OpenGL preview. The layer has an evenly lit area of the same brightness as the original image where the spotlights intersect, and a darkness around that area. The more lights you add to the composite, the greater the difference between the lit and darkened areas (when Use Additive Lighting is enabled). 162
