11 Timewarping The timing curve and the speed curve are interdependent. You cannot manipulate one without affecting the other. You use the current frame bar to scrub through the footage in the same way you use the Current Time indicator in the Playback controls. When you click and/or drag the current frame bar, the number of the current output frame (the X coordinate) appears on top of the bar. The following three buttons control the area of the graph that appears in the Curve Editor. Auto Scale-Automatically scales the timing and speed curves vertically so that the full height of the curves always remains visible. For example, if you drag a keyframe out of the visible area, the graph resizes to keep the keyframe visible. Frame In/Out-Displays only the portion of the timing and speed curves that lies between the in and out marks set for the clip. Scales the curves as necessary to fit in the Curve Editor. Frame All-Displays the entire timing and speed curves. Scales the curves vertically and horizontally as necessary to fit in the Curve Editor. Timing, Speed, and Interpolation Controls The Timing and Speed boxes provide an alternative way to manipulate the timing or speed curves. The Interpolation control provides a set of interpolation methods that can enhance the realism of the increase or decrease in speed. Timing-Displays the frame number of the source footage that maps to the output frame at the position of the current frame bar. Adjusting the value in this box repositions the entire timing curve along the Y axis. Adjusting the value in the Timing box adjusts the value in the Speed box. Speed-Displays the speed of the keyframe at the current frame bar. Adjusting the value in this box sets the speed of that keyframe at the current frame bar (if no keyframe currently exists at the current frame bar, one is created when you click and drag the Speed box). Speed is represented as a percentage of the source footage. A speed of 100% plays the footage at its original speed. A speed of 50% plays the footage at half of its original speed. A speed of 200% plays the footage at double its original speed. A speed of -100% plays the footage backwards at the original speed. By default, adjusting the Speed box adjusts the Timing box. However, if you want to adjust the speed of the keyframe without adjusting its timing, you can enable the Lock button to the right of the Speed field. When you enable the Lock button (the icon appears as a closed lock), adjusting the Speed box has no effect on the Timing box. Duration-Sets the length, in number of frames, of the timewarp effect, and thus of the output of the Timewarp operator. Duration is initially set to the number of frames in the footage. Increasing or decreasing this value expands or contracts the length of the timewarp effect (the graph in the Curve Editor expands or contracts to reflect the new value). In cases where the duration of the timewarp does not equal the duration of the source footage, or results in only a portion of the source footage being used (for example a timewarp that plays the source at halfspeed), you must decide whether you need to adjust the number of frames the branch. outputs.
