10 Using Masks Polygon Masks Use either the Bezier Mask tool or the B-Spline Mask tool to draw a polygon mask around the subject you want to isolate. The Bezier Mask tool allows you to create very precise masks since you control where the control points are placed. You can also adjust tangent handles on the control points as you draw the mask. You can also use the B-Spline Mask tool to draw curved polygon masks. For help understanding the difference between the two tools, see "Polygon Tools" in Chapter 17, "Paint: Drawing Basics''. To draw a polygon mask: 1. Select the front layer (the layer to which you want to add a mask). 2. Choose Operators | Mask | Draw Mask, or right- click and choose Operators | Draw Mask from the context menu. The selected layer is loaded into the mask operator. 3. In the Workspace panel (F3), double-click the Draw Mask operator. 4. Show the Toolbar (F2). The following tools are available in the Toolbar: Freehand Mask, Rectangular Mask, Elliptical Mask, Bezier Mask, and B-Spline Mask. 5. Select the Bezier or B-Spline Mask tool and begin adding control points for the mask object. If you are using the Bezier Mask tool, when you place a control point you can drag the mouse to create tangent handles. 6. To close the polygon mask, do one of the following: • Hold the cursor over the first point until the cursor changes to and click the point. • Press ESC or ENTER. The mask is closed and the Control Points option is selected by default. Control Points option 7. To invert the mask, enable the Invert button in the Modes controls. Note: By default, the area inside a mask is preserved (a "holdout" mask). You can invert the mask so the area outside the mask is removed (a "garbage mask"). 8. Refine the mask as needed. See Editing Masks. 9. Click the Back button to return to the composite and see the results of the masking operation. Note: To switch to the mask operator to make more adjustments, click the Forward button. You can also double-click an operator in the Workspace panel to make it the current operator. Freehand Masks Use the freehand mask to draw a mask around the appropriate area of the current layer. In the following example, a freehand mask is used to completely isolate the subject (Little Mermaid) from its original background and composite it over the back layer. To draw a freehand mask: 1. Select the front layer (the layer to which you want to add a mask). 2. Choose Operators | Mask | Draw Mask. 244

Polygon Masks

Use either the Bezier Mask tool or the B-Spline Mask

tool to draw a polygon mask around the subject you

want to isolate.

The Bezier Mask tool allows you to create very

precise masks since you control where the control

points are placed. You can also adjust tangent

handles on the control points as you draw the mask.

You can also use the B-Spline Mask tool to draw

curved polygon masks. For help understanding the

difference between the two tools, see

“Polygon

Tools” in Chapter 17, “Paint: Drawing Basics’’

To draw a polygon mask:

Select the front layer (the layer to which you want

to add a mask).

Choose Operators | Mask | Draw Mask, or right-

click and choose Operators

| Draw Mask from the

context menu.

The selected layer is loaded into the mask

operator.

In the Workspace panel (

), double-click the

Draw Mask operator.

Show the Toolbar (

The following tools are available in the Toolbar:

Freehand Mask, Rectangular Mask, Elliptical

Mask, Bezier Mask, and B-Spline Mask.

Select the Bezier or B-Spline Mask tool and begin

adding control points for the mask object.

If you are using the Bezier Mask tool, when you

place a control point you can drag the mouse to

create tangent handles.

To close the polygon mask, do one of the

following:
